At 2:00 ET, the Fed will release the June 18-19 FOMC minutes. On May 22, when the FOMC minutes were last released, the VIX was trading at just over 18. It proceeded to climb roughly 25% in the next month. Today, the VIX is at 14.35. For the past couple of months it has held true that when the Fed speaks, volatility rises. Over the past 20 years, the average on the VIX has been 20.4. One way to play rising volatility is to buy the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short Term Futures ETN (VXX).
